Looking for sublime accommodation near Tofo in southern Mozambique, sequestered enough should you want to escape other humans, but close enough to both Tofo and Barra that a short walk to either is possible? Try Sava Dunes as an option for your accommodation in Tofo.
A new luxury eco lodge just north of the bustling surfer town of Tofo, Sava Dunes is the ultimate escape for those looking to spend a few lazy days on this balmy stretch of coast.
Formerly Blue Footprints under previous ownership, Sava Dunes was recently given a facelift and converted into a mostly-solar-powered luxury four-star lodge. Five lavish suites sit perched on a high dune overlooking the warm Indian Ocean waters. Each has a private deck – with large hammock strung across it, a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom and
endless beach views.
The lodge itself is lush without being ostentatious. The earthy colours of the facade along with wood finishes and thatch canopies around the inviting pool complement the surroundings seamlessly. Inside, the light, beachy décor matches the laid-back locale, and the fresh smell drifting in from the ocean – which is literally a weak frisbee toss away – rounds it off.
A highlight at Sava is the swim-up bar. Guests love being able to stand at the bar whilst waist deep in water, and enjoying drinks from the coolness of the pool. The best part is that the lodge’s large and ubiquitous windows and sliding doors make it possible to keep an eye on the ocean and spy whales and dolphins from the swim–up bar.
Afternoons are good for beach strolls. Once you make your way down Sava’s staircase which leads straight on to the beach, a short amble in a northerly direction will deliver you to Barra beach, where a pristine and expansive stretch of sand is a dream playground for the kids, while mom and dad soak up some sun. Restaurants and bars dot the palm-
fringed dune, while dive and boat charters also abound.
Of course, a pleasant beach walk in the other direction from Sava will land you at Tofo, a bustling little beach village with a selection of good eateries and lively pubs, and even more dive operators to choose from. It also has a colourful beachfront market that sells everything from ridiculously cheap cashews and street food to sarongs, shirts and every
curio, trinket and souvenir you could think of.
In the evenings Keenan Houareau, co-manager and an absolute artist in the kitchen, whips up masterpieces. He spears or catches each night’s fare directly in front of the lodge, or buys it straight off the boats at Barra or Tofo. Crayfish, tiger prawns and blue crab are all on the menu, as is succulent snapper, barracuda or tuna – depending on what gets
sourced that morning – all accompanied by fresh seasonal produce from their very own veggie garden.
Sava Dunes is genuinely paradisiacal and the ideal oceanfront accommodation near Tofo. If your batteries need recharging, your mind decluttering and your soul a bit of healing, Sava Dunes is the spot. Get off the grid, eat fresh, kick back, and sprinkle in some ocean adventures – absolute bliss.
